DIP (Through-Hole) LED Technology Guide

Package Construction

A DIP LED bonds the die to a metal lead frame and encapsulates it in an epoxy lens molded to shape the beam. The lens diameter (3, 4, 5, 8, or 10 mm) and geometry (round, bullet, straw hat, oval, cylindrical, rectangular) set the viewing angle: a 5 mm round dome gives roughly ±25°, a straw hat spreads to ±60°, and an oval distributes light asymmetrically for wide-angle signage viewed from a distance.

Forward Voltage by Color

Color Typical VF @ 20 mA Dominant Wavelength / CCT
Red 1.9 – 2.2 V 620–630 nm
Amber / Orange 2.0 – 2.4 V 590–610 nm
Yellow 2.0 – 2.4 V 585–595 nm
Green (standard) 2.0 – 2.4 V 565–575 nm
Pure Green / Cyan 2.8 – 3.4 V 505–530 nm
Blue 2.8 – 3.4 V 460–475 nm
White 2.8 – 3.4 V 2700–6500 K

Assembly and Handling

  • Wave solder: 260 °C ± 5 °C, max 5 s contact at the lead; keep the lens at least 3 mm above the solder wave
  • Hand solder: 350 °C iron, max 3 s per joint; never clamp the flange with metal tools
  • Do not apply stress to the leads at the epoxy interface after soldering; bend leads at least 2 mm below the package body
  • ESD: handle blue/green/white dies with grounded wrist straps; red/amber/yellow dies are less ESD-sensitive

Typical applications span industrial indicators, elevator panels, signage, traffic signals, toys, and appliances. Compare with surface-mount options in the SMD LED datasheets section, or browse the full range on the Through-Hole LED category page.
