Photometric Files: The Starting Point of Every Layout

IES (.ies) and EULUMDAT (.ldt) files describe how a luminaire distributes light and are the direct input to lighting simulation. Two habits keep simulations honest: use the file that matches the ordered CCT and output package (a 5000 K file will not predict a 4000 K install), and record the file’s test date in the project file — photometry is re-tested when optics or drivers change, and layout software will not warn you about a stale file.

Matching the Document to the Project Phase

PhaseDocuments to PullDecisions They Support
Concept / budgetingSpec sheet, photometric fileFixture count, rough illuminance and LPD check

Working Through a Simulation Honestly

  1. Import the IES file and set the maintenance factor to your cleaning cycle (0.8–0.9 for industrial, 0.9 for clean commercial)
  2. Check uniformity (min/average) against the task requirement — industrial task planes typically need ≥ 0.4, sports and security applications more
  3. Compare installed LPD against the applicable energy code with the method in our lighting power density guide
  4. Validate against a measured deployment when one exists — the high-bay factory case and stadium upgrade case publish before/after photometric measurements you can benchmark against

Requesting Files Not Yet Posted

Photometry for made-to-order configurations — custom CCT, asymmetric optics, emergency variants — is generated on request. Send the configuration code through the contact form; typical turnaround is three business days for a standard-configuration IES file and two weeks for a new custom optic that requires a lab run.
